Each 75-minute class includes a mix of strength and conditioning, balance postures and stretching movements. They also incorporate breathing exercises to help calm the nervous system and let go of tension. The class concludes with a short relaxation/ meditation session, with the option to reflect on a Bible verse or simply focus on your breath if you prefer.

You don’t have to be bendy to do our classes! In fact, the less flexible you are, the more physical benefit you will gain. Many of our students have not not done yoga before. We also offer props (blocks and belts) to help your body achieve correct and safe positioning.
It’s also good to know that everyone’s body moves differently. So your positioning will always look a bit different to other people’s. This is the beauty of the poses we practice – and the beauty of the way our bodies are designed!

While our classes use the physical postures of yoga, they do not contain yogic philosophy. Instead, we offer short nuggets of wisdom drawn from the Bible and philosophy in keeping with the Christian faith.
Some churchgoers are concerned about practicing yoga because they believe the movements themselves – especially the ‘Salute to the Sun’ sequence – to be imbued with spiritual meaning. This is not the case with the westernised form of yoga most commonly practiced today.
Many yoga experts agree the sun salutations we use today were not designed as a religious practice to worship the sun. In fact the sequence – made up of 12 yoga poses joined together – is most likely based on warm-up exercises used by wrestlers in India in the early 20th century. It was brought to the West in the 1920s or 1930s.
According to Ekhart Yoga (and other experts agree) ancient sun worshippers did not use these sun salutation sequences. Instead, "their practices revolve around meditation techniques. Dynamic sequences of postures are absent or unrelated to their devotion to the sun ... To me, it seems unlikely that the Sun Salutation in yoga as we know it today has any ancient roots in the worship of Surya."
Having said all that, we do not refer to the Salute to the Sun sequence by that idiom, but rather refer to it as a ‘flow sequence’.

For those who are not Christian, this is absolutely a space for you.
Those who attend regularly will gain:
Physical benefits: increased flexibility and strength and improved wellbeing (caused by the release of endorphins associated with exercise).
Mental benefits: a greater sense of peace and a calmer, more mindful approach to life, enabling you to respond rather than react to situations.
You may also experience spiritual benefits. Short nuggets of biblical wisdom are shared in a gentle, non-confrontational way in these classes, and it’s totally up to you whether you choose to dwell on the Bible verses or simply focus on your breath.
For those who are open to listening, this wisdom has changed the lives of literally billions of people around the world. You may find it has a positive impact on your life too.

Wear comfy clothes that you can move easily in. We advise wearing/ bringing a jumper and socks in colder months. Note that it’s best to remove socks and practice in bare feet once the movement section of the class gets underway. This is to prevent slipping and to make it easier to balance.

We can supply all the equipment you need – including mats, blocks, belts and blankets.
If you have a yoga mat (and other equipment), feel free to bring it along. (Note that camping-style mats are often not suitable as they do not have enough grip on the surface and the thickness makes them tricky for balance poses. Yoga mats are usually 4mm, 6mm or 8mm max.)
We recommend you bring a bottle of water and a towel.

Please speak with your healthcare professional to let them know you plan to start a new form of exercise. Once they have given you the all-clear, then you are welcome to join our classes. Please contact us before you attend a class. Please also arrive at class a few minutes early to make sure the teacher knows you are pregnant or have a condition that will impact your movement. The teacher may advise some alternative movements for you.

While we advise leaving ample time to get to class unhurried (to help you get in the calm ‘zone’), we totally get that life happens. So if you arrive late, we absolutely want you to come on in! Please just enter quietly to avoid disturbing the other students.
